ROGER GARSIDE worked for many years at the University of Lancaster. While there he studied Cornish through KDL, successfully completing the Grade Four examination and becoming a Bard of the Cornish Gorsedd (Bardh Gorsedh Kernow) at Wadebridge in 2005.

Roger has been coming to Cornwall every year since he married a Cornishwoman in 1968. They finally moved to Penzance in 2006.

Roger took over KDL from Symon Harner when Symon moved to Spain in 2006.

ALTHOUGH born and raised on the Lizard Peninsula, by the time Symon began learning Cornish, at the age of 16, he had, in fact, moved with his family to Devon.

While at college, Symon's Cornish studies had to take a back seat, but they resumed in earnest in 1993, and by 1997 he had successfully completed the fourth grade, and was made a Bard of the Cornish Gorsedd (pronounced “Gorseth”) and invited to become a KDL teacher.

In 1998, his short story Unn Jydh yn Mis Du, which is now published by KDL, won the Morgarer Cup at the Cornish Eisteddfod.

Symon took over the running of KDL from Ray Edwards in September 2001.

Ray Edwards
Founder
RAY became interested in Cornish in 1980, after taking early retirement from language teaching. He passed the Cornish Language Board's examinations and was made a Bard of Cornwall in 1982.

In 1983, the Board asked him to organise a postal course to enable people not able to attend classes, particularly those not living in Cornwall, to study the language.

Since then, over three hundred students have enrolled in various parts of the world and the first grade course has been translated into Breton and Czech.

Several of Ray's former students are now playing leading roles in the Cornish Language Revival, some as KDL teachers.

After retiring as KDL Organiser, Ray remained very active in the field of Cornish language scholarship until his death in April 2008.
